Unicode Script property and Javascript

Noticed at 21:59 November 20th, 2008

http://blogamundo.net/dev/2008/11/21/unicode-script-property-and-javascript/ asks Hoosgot,

Dear lazyweb, I would like a Javascript function to work like this: magicalFunction(’カ’) → ‘Katakana’ magicalFunction(’a') → ‘Latin’ magicalFunction(’አ’) → ‘Ethiopic’ In other words, I want to be able to access the script property described in UAX #24: Script Names. This actually exists already in Perl regular expressions, where you can just say \p{Katakana} in a regex to match Katakana characters. Maybe such a thing could end up in the next version of Javascript… not that I have the slightest idea where to make that suggestion. But in the meantime, it seems to me that there should be a unicodescripts.js or some such. Any ideas on what would be an efficient programming approach to implementing such a data structure, something

Blogging

Noticed at 16:46 November 18th, 2008

http://illandancient.blogspot.com/2008/11/blogging.html asks Hoosgot,

Went to the London Bloggers meet up this evening. Had a road to Damascus moment of epifany. It was a bit grim. I scrawled notes on my pad and will sling them on ill theatre with indepth typings later, but I think I ought to stick to the positive shades now. The 1MMP Project. I want a mobile phone that will go for a month without recharging. Not a month in standby, but hey, a month talk time, without charging. I don’t care if it has a tiny display and the battery is like a car battery. Those are my specs, now lazyweb, deliver!! And then, once we have that under our arm or in our backpack, I want the 1MLT

Nikon D90 and Linux - a quick update …

Noticed at 13:09 November 18th, 2008

http://blog.windfluechter.net/index.php?/archives/184-Nikon-D90-and-Linux-a-quick-update.html asks Hoosgot,

As I have reported lately I obtained a Nikon D90 DSLR some weeks ago. Gphoto2 (and other application depending on its functionality like digikam) didn’t recognized the D90 in PTP mode and the camera can’t be configured yet to offer the SD card as a mass storage device. In the meantime I found out that the D90 does work with gphoto2 in generic PTP mode - at least this is with Ubuntu Intrepid on my x86 laptop while Debian Sid on my G4 PowerPC fails to detect the D90. It detects the camera, the pictures, loads some 1 or 2 thumbs and hangs. So, I don’t know whether there are some differences between Intrepid and Sid (gphoto2 is the same version

Marketing FIOS

Noticed at 9:39 November 17th, 2008

http://www.noahbrier.com/quickies/2008/11/marketing_fios.php asks Hoosgot,

This is as much a lazyweb request as it is thinking out loud: Looking at the way Verizon has spread FIOS seems to me like a classic case of old-school advertising working just as its supposed. They’ve bought tons of TV, used claim-based messaging (”X times faster than cable/DSL”) and every one and their mother knows about them. I haven’t seen a Facebook page, heard about blogger outreach or anything else of that ilk (though they certainly may be doing all of it). Anyway, I guess my point is that you can still build a brand the old-fashioned way: By buying a whole lot of television ads. Think about it, where did you hear about FIOS? (Usual caveats apply: I

Dear lazyweb, Do you know of a free-as-in-speech scp/sftp client for my Nokia E65? Something that runs on J2ME MIDP 2.0 or Symbian S60 3rd edition compatible devices? PaderSyncSFTP is not free software. They don’t even publish any source :(
